ivey league academy: week in review!

Reading:  This week we started a literature-based curriculum called Storytime Treasures.  The student reads on-level books a little at a time, and then answers questions or does fun activities based on the book.  The first book is Little Bear.  Since it has four different "chapters," we did the first two this past week.  It's a good curriculum because it also has language arts practice; Caleb worked on punctuation and things like that.

Spelling:  We did Week 24 of his spelling curriculum.

Handwriting:  Caleb continued in his Joke Handwriting Workbook.

Vocabulary:  Our words for this week were "garment," "scowl," "prance," and "thoughtful."

Math:  We continued working in Caleb's math workbook.

Bible:  We continued in Leading Little Ones to God.

Read-Aloud:  We finished Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and decided to borrow the sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator from the library.  We're a couple of chapters in so far.

Science:  This week's topic was floating and sinking.  We watched the episode of "The Magic School Bus" and also a YouTube video from Sci Show Kids.  I made a simple experiment where Caleb predicted which household items would float and which would sink.  He was surprised by the cotton ball...it floated at first, but once it took on water it sank!

U.S. Geography:  This week we learned about Louisiana and Texas.  Caleb colored pages for each state and we read books from the library.  For Louisiana, we learned about Trombone Shorty, a musician from New Orleans.  We listened to some of his music on YouTube and Caleb was hooked!  We also learned that Trombone Shorty provided the "wah wah" sounds for the grown-ups in The Peanuts Movie, so that was a fun fact.  For Texas, we read about cowboys, and Caleb became very interested in Billy the Kid.  I think he was amazed that a teenager could commit so much crime!  We looked up more about Billy the Kid online.

Homeschool Group:  On Friday we were at the center, and our topic was nocturnal animals.  We sorted diurnal and nocturnal animal cards, listened to nocturnal animals sounds, played an echolocation game to learn how bats find food in the dark, made firefly art, and dissected owl pellets!
